Renal patients are now able to access dialysis locally alleviating the need and expense of travelling to Jaffna and other hospitals for treatment. Patients have the facility of being treated overnight so they are able to go to work during the day, thereby continuing to earn a living. This project will expand to the Eastern province as well. We will expand this to Kaluwanchikuddy Hospital in the Eastern SL.

Setting up of a cardiology unit in the Mullaitivu District Hospital
The Cardiology unit is able to serve over 200,000 people in the district. Patients with their carers often travelled many kilometres for consultations and treatment at great cost. Patients not only needed to find funds for travel but often had to pay someone to accompany them as a support person. The setting up of the cardiology unit has been a great boost to the local community.

Providing knowledge transfer and medical training via Telehealth facilities
This project enables the medical experts in various fields to provide diagnostic & therapeutic consultation for patients in the Northern Province in Sri Lanka. We aim to expand this project to the Eastern Province in the near future.

Supporting the Jaipur Prosthetic Limb Project – Jaffna and Batticaloa Prosthetic Limb Services – Eastern Province
There are over 20,000 people, most of them victims of war who use prosthetic limbs. In addition to providing artificial limbs, the Project also remodelled limbs as required by 1/3 of its clients. This project, funded by INGO’s lost their support when the Sri Lankan Government ordered INGO’s out of the country! AMAF along with the Rotary Club in Sri Lanka came to its rescue funding the project so this important service to the community may be continued.

School dental program in Mullaitivu district and Pattalipuram.
AMAF employs a dentist, dental therapist and dental assistant to provide dental health/oral hygiene care at schools. The dental unit runs workshops for teachers in dental hygiene who pass on their knowledge to students and fellow teachers, distributing toothbrushes and toothpaste donated by AMAF. A dentist or dental therapist attends school assemblies once a term highlighting the importance of dental hygieneTeachers and dental therapists encourage the students to pass on their knowledge of dental hygiene to their families and others in the neighborhood. We plan on extending our school dental program to schools in Killinochi shortly.

Financial bursaries to disadvantaged medical students at medical faculties in North East Sri Lanka.
AMAF currently supports 21 disadvantaged medical students, providing them Rs.4,000 per month during their undergraduate studies, until successful completion of their medical degree.

Campaign to raise awareness of drug and alcohol abuse.
There has been an alarming increase in the use of alcohol and illicit drugs amongst the youth in North East Sri Lanka. AMAF, in partnership with the Rotary and Lions clubs in Sri Lanka, provides funding for a public health campaign raising awareness of the dangers of alcoholism and substance abuse aimed at school children aged 15 to 19 years.

We also respond to appeals following emergencies like COVID 19, floods and drought by providing dry rations and issuing of mosquito nets during the Dengue season.
